*“A World War 2 Nissan hut transformed into one of Orkney’s most moving places of beauty, faith and reconciliation.”*

Set on the small island of Lamb Holm and reached by way of the Churchill Barriers, the Italian Chapel is one of Orkney’s most memorable historic sites.

It was created by Italian prisoners of war in POW Camp 60, who had been brought to Orkney to work on the Churchill Barriers, the great concrete causeways built to protect the naval anchorage at Scapa Flow. Out of two ordinary Nissen huts and a limited supply of salvaged materials, they fashioned a space of worship that still feels graceful, intimate and deeply personal. What survives today is not simply a preserved building, but a witness to the imagination and devotion of the men who made it.
